The Importance of Routine Exclusion Screening

Organizations that receive federal healthcare funding must follow certain rules set out in the federal government's exclusion screening process. The organization will verify an individual, vendor, or contractor is not listed on an exclusion list maintained by the federal, state, and/or other appropriate authorities. Generally, pre-employment checks are done; however, the Office of Inspector General (OIG) recommends ongoing monthly exclusion screening of employees, vendors, and contractors. Ongoing exclusion screening provides organizations with a method for ensuring compliance with federal regulations and avoiding large monetary penalties when claiming reimbursement for federally funded services provided by ineligible employees/contractors/suppliers.
