Smith had a coming out party in the playoffs, receiving Richard Sherman's tipping ball to
Madden 24 coins clinch his place in the NFC Championship Game and running back a pick six in the Super Bowl, winning the MVP award.
Smith is an encouraging achievement for those who didn't get invited to the Combine. Smith revealed to MMQB that he's still upset about being a snub, and uses the experience as a continual motivational tool:
"It's not how you start, it's how you finish," he said. "Let be humbled by it, and let it serve as an opportunity to ignite. You'll notice that I have the 2011 draft bookmarked to my desktop computer. I'd estimate that every month at most, I open it up for a browse, and then check out all the names, beginning with 254. I still do now. I'd love to see all those selected before me and what happened to them. In the end, winning this Super Bowl validated my progress and confirmed that I could play."
The most notable Combine exclusions included Wyoming quarterback Brett Smith, who was one of 13 students that did not make it to Indianapolis. South Carolina defensive end Chaz Sutton also didn't get an invite despite having as many sacks on teammates Jadeveon and Jadeveon. San Jose State wide receiver Chandler Jones was David Fales the number one target for David Fales, but Jones didn't get to join his teammate on the field at the Combine. Finally, Washington quarterback Keith Price was displeased by his dismissal and promised to work harder to become an Madden NFL 24 starter.
The Combine remains an important event however, it is feasible for players who weren't allowed to have the Madden NFL 24 shot with enough dedication and determination. Pro days, private training sessions and invitations to camp will be even more crucial to these players as they move forward so that they can convince scouts to reconsider not inviting them.
Malcolm Smith didn't go to Indianapolis however, he did attend Disney World. We're guessing he's OK with the compromise.
